30 Songs in 30 Days — Day 1

About eighteen months ago, baseball writer and all around cool person Lisa Winston ran a series on her blog called "30 Songs in 30 Days". She didn't claim it as a new idea — it had been around as a meme on Facebook on and off for a while — but turning it into a series of blog posts allowed her to flesh out some back story behind each item on the list. I filed her list away at the time, thinking that it might be fun to try myself someday. Someday being today, needless to say. If I'm looking to write more regularly, what better way to develop the habit than committing myself to thirty days of posts in a row?

Day 1 - Your Favourite Song

I like to think of myself as well-listened (well-listened; is that even a thing?). My music collection ranges from hard rock to show tunes, from lounge to classical, from 80s' pop to sad bastard (™Jason Chan). I still have cassette tapes and albums, even through I have nothing on which to play them. I have boxes full of CDs in storage, all of them loaded into my iTunes library.

All of which is to say that in my own collection alone, I have lots from which to choose when picking a favourite song. And yet, it hardly took even a moment of thought. My favourite song, by far, is "American Pie" by Don McLean.

Yes, I know — clocking in at 8:35 long, it could almost be my two favourite songs. But I fell in love with this song from the first time I ever heard it on the radio as a kid (the radio version running only 4:12). Finding out that there was a longer version was gravy. As a singer, it's a fun tune to sink my teeth into, and harder than it would first appear. Add to that the generally accepted wisdom as to what it's about — well, it's pretty much perfect as far as I'm concerned.

Heck, it even survived a ridiculously awful Madonna cover version…
